Rediscover ‘That Holiday Feeling’ on a camping trip to the Southern Downs

Extended Family Camping Weekend at Gordon Country

There’s nothing quite like a camping holiday in nature to help you slow down, recharge, and reconnect with the important things in life – and in Queensland’s Southern Downs & Granite Belt, nature is at its very best.

Whether you’re a seasoned vanlifer or trying your hand at pitching a tent for the first time, there’s a campsite here with your name on it. Out here, it’s about the crackle of the campfire, the smell of toasted marshmallows, and the simplicity of living with just the essentials.

Leave the noise and distractions behind. Gather your friends and family, embrace the wide-open spaces, and rediscover that holiday feeling – the kind that stays with you long after the fire dies out.

Popular bush camping sites

There are many popular bush camping sites across Southern Downs & Granite Belt, but don’t worry, as you won’t catch hordes of crowds impacting your serene stay. Blending idyllic settings with plenty of space to spread out and relax is just what the operators of these private campgrounds have perfected over the years.

Set on acres of pristine bushland, this is where the hum of traffic and ping of mobile phones fade into the soothing sounds of bird calls, grazing cattle, and the gentle rustle of wildlife. Whether staying for a weekend or for a longer break, there’s no shortage of ways to reconnect with nature –from bush hikes, canoeing, swimming, bike riding, 4WDing and wildlife spotting.

Gordon Country and Goomburra Valley Campground in the Goomburra Valley, Foxbar Falls in Amiens and Wynola Country Cousins Camping in Killarney are all tried and tested favourites that tick every box on your camping wish list.

Campgrounds for fishing and canoeing

At these dam and riverside camping spots, imagine the simple joy of soaking in the solitude while angling for fish or gliding across the waters in a canoe. At night, enjoy the soothing sound of water to gently lull you to sleep.

At Washpool Reserve Camping Area, Lake Leslie Tourist Park and Connolly Dam near Warwick, and Sommerville Valley Tourist Park and Glenlyon Dam Visitor Park in the southern part of the region, visitors can enjoy everything from adrenaline-pumping jetskiing, boating and waterskiing to tranquil stand up paddleboarding, canoeing and swimming. Some activities are not permitted on some waterways, so make sure to check before booking.

Just south of Stanthorpe, take a look at Stanthorpe Holiday Park and Country Style Holiday Park for creek-side camping close to 40+ local wineries and attractions.

Farmstay-style camping for families

Embrace the curiosity and pure joy of camping with kids as they learn to pitch a tent, roast marshmallows, star gaze and become mini adventurers. At Bestbrook Mountain Resort, kids have the chance to feed farm animals, milk cows, make butter and learn how to crack a whip. Feeding native king parrots and crimson rosellas is a highlight at Queen Mary Falls Caravan Park, and, at Foxbar Falls, there’s plenty of water play with three lakes on the property. Just south of Stanthorpe lies The Folly Ballandean, a tranquil off-grid campsite on a working truffle farm – make sure you book in for a truffle hunting tour while you’re there!
