Antique trails and quirky finds: Where to fossick for treasures in the Southern Downs and Granite Belt

It’s time to switch off Antiques Roadshow and set your GPS for the Southern Downs & Granite Belt for your very own Antiques Road-trip!

If your idea of a great holiday involves cabinets of curiosities, timeworn timber shelves and stories whispered through vintage finds, then Stanthorpe, Warwick and surrounds are your shopping paradise.

With a rich colonial history and rural charm, you’ll uncover antique stores and second-hand boutiques where you can source everything from Victorian furniture and art deco glassware to quirky Australiana and timeless fashion.

Whether you’re a serious collector or a casual browser, this charming corner of southern Queensland is more than just wineries and national parks – it’s home to your next dreamy vintage find.

Warwick

Beyond its sandstone buildings and historic pubs, Warwick has several antique shops and second-hand stores well worth a wander.

Alley Cat Trading

Alley Cat Trading

Alley Cat Trading – Add a touch of whimsy and fun to your homewares with a visit to Alley Cat Trading. With a range of new and used pieces, the store regularly updates its antique and vintage finds, meaning there’s something else to explore with each visit. Staple items that fly off the shelves include cast iron garden hooks, rustic kitchenware, flower vases and natural beauty products.

Garden’s Galore – Warwick’s largest garden centre is also home to a popular café, gift shop, women’s fashion boutique and gelato shop. With every element elegantly curated, you’ll fall in love with beautiful homewares, clothing, shoes and accessories in the Amapola boutique. Pick up some of Warwick’s famous rose bushes or seedlings, then dine outside amongst the gardens.

Trésor Maison – Trésor Maison, meaning ‘Treasure House’ in French, sets the scene of yesteryear. The weathered timber building with corrugated iron roof gives little indication of the treasure trove housed inside, however, upon entering, you will find wall-to-wall collections of handpicked French provincial finds. In between browsing for armchairs and bookcases, mirrors and paintings, fine china and garden ornaments, you can chat with the lovely owner and curator, Shirley.

Little Shop of Books & Retro Wares – Forget your rechargeable devices and instead pick up a classic comic or book from this hidden book haven. Every theme is covered from 1970s original superhero comics (most in original plastic packaging) to Western adventure novels. The perfect accompaniment for your weekend away by the fire with a glass of wine? A novel, of course.

Glengallan Homestead markets – Built in 1867, the solitary sandstone mansion at Glengallan Homestead is a time-warp experience – the kind usually associated with ghost stories and stories of boom, gloom and ruin. However, on the first Sunday of every month, the homestead is very much alive as it hosts over 60+ market stalls of artwork, garden wares, fashion, toys, jewellery, locally-made condiments, leatherware, candles, fresh produce, honey and much more. Wander the local wares and then enjoy some scones and tea in the homestead – a history lover’s must-see.

Corner Couture – On the corner of Grafton and Palmerin Streets in the heart of Warwick, Corner Couture is a new boutique known for its warm service and beautiful fashion. Stocking quality brands like Country Road, Goondiwindi Cotton and Elm, it’s the perfect place to find stylish everyday wear, occasion outfits and thoughtful accessories.

Stanthorpe is at the heart of Queensland’s only cold climate wine region where multi-award winning hand-crafted wines continue to break new ground both nationally and internationally and that is what brings most visitors to the region, but this remarkable gem has a lot more to offer anyone who takes takes a closer look.

Washpool Supply Co.

Pretty & Rustic – Mixing antique and pre-loved finds with a good dose of upcycled timber furniture, Pretty & Rustic has the popular farmhouse aesthetic perfected. If a one-of-a-kind apothecary cabinet, meat safe or reupholstered wicker armchair is on your home wish list, you’ll be glad you made the stop.

Kent Saddlery – Come on in and smell the leather at Kent Saddlery. While you may not be in the market for a saddle or bridle, a visit to this multi-generational saddlery is a glimpse into the world of cattle stations and the outback.

Granite Belt Christmas Farm – It’s festive all year round at the famous Granite Belt Christmas Farm, and you can let your nostalgia run wild with their hand-selected collection of vintage-inspired Christmas decorations and homewares. Mrs. Claus serves up hot chocolates, frosty milkshakes and delicious treats to fuel your shopping adventures. Hungry for more?
