Fishing and Boating

In Queensland, you do not require a permit to fish recreationally, unless you’re fishing in a stocked impoundment. Stocked impoundments are marked with an asterisk below and permits are available online, over the counter at selected Australia Post outlets and at selected sub-agent outlets in the region.

Leslie Dam*

Located 13km west of Warwick on the Cunningham Highway, Leslie Dam’s facilities include a boat ramp, picnic area with toilets, boat hire and boat fuel. Permits and bait are available onsite. Camping is available at the Washpool Reserve and Lake Leslie Tourist Park.

Connolly Dam*

Located 15km south-east of Warwick on the New England Highway, Connolly Dam’s facilities include shore fishing and toilets. Electric and oar powered vessels are permitted seven days per week during daylight hours, but power boating is prohibited. The Dam contains Golden Perch, Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Jew and Spangled Perch. Camping is available onsite.

Condamine River

River fishing is a relaxing pastime and enthusiasts will enjoy the waterholes along the Condamine River in Warwick. There are plenty of spots worth a try, particularly around the weir in Queens Park or near the old Parmalat Dairy.

Storm King Dam*

Storm King Dam is a short drive south-east from the centre of Stanthorpe town. Usually this is well-stocked with Murray Cod, Yellow Belly, Silver Perch, Spangled Perch and Eel-tailed catfish with fishing permits available locally from sporting stores and service stations. Storm King Dam is also a popular spot for water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing. Permits for boating on Storm King Dam are available from the Southern Downs Regional Council. You can hire canoes from Sommerville Valley Tourist Park.

Update 15 January 2019: Due to current water levels at Storm King Dam, power boats, jet skis or water skis at the dam are currently not permitted. Small motor boats with engines of six horsepower or less and travelling less than 10 knots are still permitted. 

Quart Pot Creek

Try your luck in front of the Stanthorpe Visitor Information Centre on Leslie Parade, or near the Granite Street Weir. Note, some areas of Quart Pot Creek are restricted.

Severn River

15km south of Stanthorpe with picnic and BBQ areas, the Severn River offers great spots to cast a line off the banks. Spinning lures are popular, however watch the scrub and bushes along the banks. Sundown National Park provides the best public access to the Severn.

Glenlyon Dam*

Glenlyon Dam is ideal for wildlife viewing and many water sports including skiing, sailing and fishing. Fish species in the dam include Golden Perch, Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Jew and Spangled Perch. Camping sites, cabins and caravans are available on site, as are fishing permits.
